Stage Chat

Member edition

July 2003

From the President

Welcome to another Stage Chat, keeping you informed of what’s happening at DTC!

Despite the cold weather, a keen cast for our production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat has been enthusiastically braving the elements to attend rehearsals.  (See our cast list below!)  We are well on track to provide a very entertaining and visually exciting production in September.

Although Joseph is our main focus at the moment, we have already started preparing for our first musical of 2004 – Carousel.  For those interested in being involved in this production, see elsewhere in this newsletter.

Let’s not forget our play in January.  Anybody interested in directing or auditioning should contact Clare on 9555 5717.

Because a significant number of children are involved with Joseph, we have delayed having a JETS (youth) production until early next year.

We are currently debating which play to present in January.  If you would like to contribute to the debate, audition or otherwise assist with the production, please contact Clare Andrews on 9555 5717.

DTC needs people to assist with all areas including direction.

Play reading

Dandenong Theatre Company's own Darren Brealey has recently completed his sixth full-length work for the stage entitled ‘Hainsworth Holiday’. He is also the author of seven short plays, and several short film scripts, monologues and short stories.

Darren first came to public attention in 1996 when his play, ‘The Meeting Place’ was produced during the Melbourne Fringe Festival. He won a Special Recommendation Award for ‘The Meeting Place’ in the Melbourne Fringe Performance Art Awards.

In 1998, Darren Brealey’s next full-length work, ‘Three Shorts’ was produced at Melbourne’s Workhouse Theatre. ‘Three Shorts’ comprised three self-contained plays: ‘Disturbing Mavis’, ‘The Stair’ and ‘Champagne Ladies’. Once again, critical and public reaction to the work was favourable, with ‘Champagne Ladies’ singled out for particular praise: “With ‘Three Shorts’, Darren Brealey has written an eclectic mixture of observations that manage, somehow, to connect … with the satirical ‘Champagne Ladies’ definitely my favourite” (Stage Whispers).

‘Performing The Goat’ followed in 1999, and was produced as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The strong, positive audience reaction and critical comment confirmed Brealey’s ability to create realistic, original characterisations and dialogue: “Darren Brealey delivers four humorous and often terrifyingly accurate portrayals … four short plays that capture colloquial Aussie stereotypes and presents them with hilarious accuracy” (Buzz Cuts).

Darren joined DTC (then known as Dandenong Light Opera Company) in 1984 in his first musical, "My Fair Lady".  Back then he was a starry-eyed fourteen year old boy. He has been back on eclectic occasions to perform, assist and promote DTC in many ways. Today nothing has changed; he still has stars in his eyes.

Darren now brings his new work to DTC, searching for a cast and a rehearsed reading. This satirical and farce-styled play caters for all ages; requiring actors from the age of 10 to 70, male and female.

The Hainsworth family (Mum, Dad and the four children) arrive at their sea-side holiday home to get away from the city life. Their staunch Housekeeper and mischievous Butler attend to the family's needs and their own. During the course of the play, the audience learn that Mum and Dad like to entertain their own guests on the side; the love triangle with the eldest daughter is some-what scandalous; and to throw in a little purity, the maiden Aunts arrive to announce their Final Will and Testament and the heir to the family fortune and to unravel the wickedness.

It is a fun play with much action all in the one staged set.  Darren is looking for a cast of 14 to perform a closed rehearsed reading. This process will allow Darren to make notes and rewrite the script, before submitting it to the Committee of DTC.  His intention is to have Hainsworth Holiday produced as a summer production for DTC.

Anyone interested in assisting Darren with the rehearsed reading can contact him via e-mail at cosmicplayers@yahoo.com.au. He can e-mail you a character treatment, synopsis and a few pages of the script to give those interested in helping, an idea of what you'll be reading.  Please supply your name, age and sex when applying for more information, as this will determine the information you receive - the character details will be relevant to your own details.

This is another way DTC is proudly supporting and promoting community theatre.

Carousel – brief synopsis

In 1873 in a small New England village, there is a love affair between Billy Bigelow, a travelling carnival man, and Julie Jordan, a local factory worker.  Desperate for money after learning that he is soon to become a father, Billy is killed during an attempted robbery.  Several years later, when he is allowed to return to earth for a short time, he seeks out the daughter of his union with Julie…
