Synopsis
Cosi is the humorous story of a group of people living in a
mental institution, trying to put on a theatrical production.
Lewis is brought in from outside the institution to direct
the production. Fresh out of university, he is unprepared for what he is about
to experience in the presence of the institution's inmates. While trying to
keep control of proceedings, he is continually frustrated and undermined by the
cast members, particularly Roy. Along the way he also loses the respect of his
friends on the outside who deride his determination to make the production a
success.
The main driving force behind the production is Roy, an
inmate who is keen to perform his favourite musical, Cosi Fan Tutte. Oblivious
to logistical problems (such as the opera being in Italian and a general lack
of musical ability within the group), he maintains his enthusiasm and energy
for Cosi Fan Tutte, except for brief periods of depression.
Roy and Lewis, along with inmates Doug, Julie, Ruth, Cherry,
Henry and Zac, manage to put together some sort of production which is seen as
a success, at least in the opinions of those within the institution.
It is the characters, though, that the audience is drawn to
and we are left wanting to share their success and learn more of their fate.
The characters in the play are:
Lewis - a young director who has recently completed a university
degree.
Lucy - Lewis's girlfriend.
Nick - Lewis's friend and a radical anti-war campaigner.
Justin - a social worker.
Roy - a nervously enthusiastic Mozart fanatic.
Doug - a pyromaniac with poor social skills.
Julie - an attractive junkie.
Cherry - a strong, amorous woman.
Ruth - an obsessive character.
Henry - an emotionally paralysed lawyer.
Zac - a dysfunctional musician.
